A 37-year-old rural Covington man was pronounced dead at the scene of a one vehicle accident Sunday, December 6. Paul R. Nelson, RR 2, Covington, died of multiple head and internal injuries after his car left State Road in Illinois and hit a tree stump.
Investigators theorize that Nelson was northbound on State Line Road about one and one half miles north of Voorhees, Illinois. The car left the road on the west side, skidded some 200 feet in a ditch and then hit the tree stump.

A passerby discovered the wrecked car about 2:30 a.m. Sunday. Danville Fire Department’s rescue unit worked nearly an hour to extricate the victim’s body from the car. Vermillion (Illinois) County Coroner Lyle Irvin said there were no witnesses to the accident.

Nelson was a machinist for Continental Can Company. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and Moose Lodge 1001.
Born February 10, 1944, in Racine, Wisconsin, he was a son of Walter and Josephine Pfeifer Nelson. He married Fay Rothering July 11, 1964, in Racine. She survives.

Other survivors include two daughters, Ann and Sarah Joe, both at home; a son, Christopher, at home; a brother, David Nelson of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; two sisters, Carol Yasce of Whitewater, Wisconsin; and Nancy Peterson of Racine.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

Services were conducted Tuesday at Holy Family Catholic Church with Rev. Robert Hoffman officiating. Burial was in St. Patrick’s Cemetery. Lakeside Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements. -s
